Vilnius Lithuania

In December 2022, I visited the Southernmost country that makes up what is commonly called the Baltic Countries – Vilnius, Lithuania.

Tip: Don’t tell a person from Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania that the Baltic countries are all the same – they’ll be a bit offended.

But the world groups these countries together.

The best thing about Vilnius is the medieval architecture, charming cobblestone streets, and historical landmarks. The people were very nice, they spoke English, and the natural scenery was great too. (although mostly covered in snow)

Here are some thoughts to help you.

Where to Stay in Vilnius, Lithuania

Congress Avenue Hotel

The Congress Avenue Hotel is a 4-star hotel located in Vilnius, Lithuania. It offers modern rooms with free Wi-Fi, a restaurant, and a fitness center.

The hotel is conveniently located near the city’s main attractions and business district. The hotel is highly rated by the guests for its comfort, location and staff.

The best thing about this hotel was that it was literally across the street from a very good mall called G9.

It felt like it was in the heart of the city.

Vilnius Cathedral in Vilnius, Lithuania

The Vilnius Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the Old Town of Vilnius, Lithuania. It is the main cathedral of the Archdiocese of Vilnius and the heart of Catholic spiritual life in Lithuania.

While I was there in December, there was a Christmas market set up in this plaza, and it felt like the main part of town.

The cathedral has a long history, with its origins dating back to the 14th century. The current building, which was completed in the early 18th century, is a fine example of Baroque architecture.

The exterior features a grand façade with a central portal and two bell towers. Inside, the cathedral is decorated with frescoes, sculptures, and an impressive high altar.

The most valuable treasure of the cathedral is the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary, which is said to have been painted by St. Luke the Evangelist. The Vilnius Cathedral is a popular tourist destination and an important cultural and religious site in Lithuania.

Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania

After you check out the Cathedral, walk around the side to The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.

The Palace is a historic building located in Vilnius, Lithuania, that was originally built in the 15th century as the residence for the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, who ruled the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

The palace was expanded and rebuilt over the centuries and underwent major renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries. The palace is a grand and imposing building with a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles.

Inside, you can see a variety of exhibits that showcase the history and culture of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The palace also houses a museum that displays artifacts and artworks from the medieval and early modern periods, including frescoes, sculptures, and ceramics.

The Palace of the Grand Dukes is one of the most important historical sites in Lithuania and a must-see attraction if you’re in Vilnius.

Presidential Building

The Presidential Building, also known as the Presidential Palace, is the official residence and office of the President of Lithuania.

The building was originally constructed in the 14th century but has undergone numerous renovations and expansions over the centuries. The palace is an elegant and stately building featuring a mix of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles.

The palace has a grand façade with a central entrance and two towers. Inside, the palace is decorated with frescoes, sculptures, and artwork, as well as a variety of historical and cultural artifacts. The palace also has a number of reception halls and meeting rooms, which are used for official events and ceremonies.

The Presidential Building is an important symbol of the Lithuanian state and is one of the most iconic buildings in Vilnius.

KGB Museum

The Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights is a historical museum located in Vilnius, Lithuania. The museum aims to educate visitors about the history of Lithuania during the Soviet and Nazi occupations, as well as the country’s fight for freedom and independence.

The museum is housed in a building that was used by the KGB, and the Soviet secret police.

The exhibits in the museum include photographs, documents, and personal artifacts that tell the story of the occupation and the resistance.

You learn about the lives of political prisoners, deportations, and the resistance movement. The museum also features a section dedicated to the Lithuanian partisan war, which lasted from 1944 to 1953.

The Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights is a sobering and thought-provoking destination that provides a deeper understanding of the Lithuanian past and the sacrifices made by its people to gain freedom.

You will need about 2 hours to read everything in this museum.

The most interesting aspect of this museum was going downstairs, where all the cells were.

Old Town Vilnius

Old Town Vilnius is the historic center of the Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture.

The old town is home to a variety of historical landmarks, including the Gothic St. Anne’s Church, the Baroque Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, and the impressive Vilnius Cathedral.

You can also explore the charming cobblestone streets and enjoy the many restaurants, cafes, and shops. It is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the city, known for its picturesque streets and charming atmosphere, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll or for exploring the city’s rich history.

There are amazing buildings everywhere you look. I can’t think of any other must-see landmarks, but all the buildings in Vilnius and the old town of Vilnius are amazing.

Only Budapest, Hungary, has more amazing architecture.

Rumors Lounge and Club

This was one of the best bars I saw in Vilnius. It started slowly, about 11:00 pm, then at 1:00 am, it was wall-to-wall packed.

There were some good-looking Lithuanian girls in here for sure, but the crowd will not blow your mind. (if you’re a guy).

Summary:

Vilnius is a cool city with a Budapest, Hungary feel. (see Budapest here: The 7 Most Instagramable Places in Budapest, Hungary

If you’re in the Baltics, definitely drop down to Lithuania if you can.
