Riga, Latvia The Jewel of The Baltics
I’ve now been to all 3 of the Baltic Countries, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. I can say without a doubt Riga is the best city in the Baltics.
Where I Stayed
I stayed in the Radisson Blu hotel. This hotel is a modern and luxurious hotel located in the heart of the city, offering comfortable rooms, a fitness center, a spa, and a restaurant.
It is located about 1/2 mile from Old Town Riga and the Freedom Monument.
Things to Do in Riga, Latvia
The Freedom Monument in Riga, Latvia
After the House of the Blackheads, The Freedom Monument is probably the most famous icon in Riga.
It is a 42-meter-tall obelisk located in the center of the city. It was built in 1935 to commemorate Latvian independence and the soldiers who died during the Latvian War of Independence.
It is also a symbol of freedom and democracy.
The monument is surrounded by allegorical female figures representing Latvian culture and history. It is a popular place for locals and tourists alike to gather and pay their respects.
House of the Blackheads in Riga, Latvia
The House of the Blackheads is a Gothic building located in the old town of Riga, Latvia.
It is probably the most famous building in Latvia.
It was built in the 14th century as a guild hall for unmarried German merchants known as the Blackheads. The building was severely damaged during World War II and rebuilt in the late 20th century.
Today, it is used as a concert hall and event venue. The building features a striking façade with ornate decorations and sculptures, including a large figure of St. George and the Dragon at the top. It is a popular tourist destination and a symbol of Riga’s rich history and culture.
St. Peter’s Church in Riga, Latvia
St. Peter’s Church is a prominent medieval church located in the heart of Riga’s Old Town, Latvia. It is considered a symbol of Riga’s religious and cultural heritage.
It is one of the city’s most important architectural and historical landmarks. The church was built in the 13th century and has undergone many changes over the centuries.
The most significant of these was the addition of the baroque tower in the 17th century, which is now the highest point in Riga’s Old Town.
The interior of the church features beautiful frescoes and intricate carvings. It is also home to the largest organ in the Baltic states.
You can climb to the top of the tower for panoramic views of the city.
I did so, and at the top, you walk outside. It was absolutely freezing up there. But I got great footage of the skyline.
The Christmas Markets in Riga
There are a few good things about traveling to Europe in winter, and one of them is the Christmas markets.
In Riga, the markets are set up in the heart of the city, in front of the famous St. Peter’s Church and the House of the Blackheads.
The markets offer a wide variety of traditional Latvian handicrafts, such as hand-knitted sweaters, wooden toys, and handmade candles, as well as delicious Latvian food, such as smoked meats, gingerbread, and mulled wine.
The Christmas market was also a great way to experience the culture of Riga and Latvia.
Summary:
Riga is a great city, and I can’t wait to go back during the summer. I was only there for five days and didn’t get a chance to leave the city. However, if you go, check out the entire country.
